Student Film Openings and Construction Mark Scheme

In class we watched a few different film opening and marked them against the mark scheme. Then we went and found a few of our own to mark.

Mark Scheme
Level 1 0–23 marks The work for the main task is possibly incomplete. There is minimal evidence in the work of the creative use of any relevant technical skills such as:
• Producing material appropriate for the target audience and task;
• using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions;
• using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;
• shooting material appropriate to the task set; including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot distance and close attention to mise-en-scene;
• using editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions and other effects.
Level 2 24–35 marks There is evidence of a basic level of ability in the creative use of some of the following technical skills:
• Producing material appropriate for the target audience and task;
• using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions;
• using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;
• shooting material appropriate to the task set;, including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot distance and close attention to mise-en-scene;

Level 3 36–47 marks There is evidence of proficiency in the creative use of many of the following technical skills:

Level 4 48–60 marksThere is evidence of excellence in the creative use of most of the following technical skills:
• material appropriate for the target audience and task;
• using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions;
• using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;
• shooting material appropriate to the task set;including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot distance and close attention to mise-en-scene;
• using editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions and other effects.

Research codes/conventions of genre and audience

We researched different codes/conventions of genre and audience to come up with our film opening. Here are some of the ideas we got:

Storyline:
  • Unsolved crime
  • Centred around detective/Normal civilian
  • Detective/ Normal civilian pieces things together
Setting
  • A big open area where the murder will happen 
  • Office/room- detective/normal civilian puts pieces together 
Themes:
  • Mystery- lots of enigma codes to make you think who could have murdered the young girl
  • Crime- young girl being murdered in a park
Characters:
  • Detective/Normal civilian

Props:
  • murder weapon 
Editing:
  • Fades to black- creates suspense
Sound:
  • Mellow, eerie orchestral music- adds tension

All of the codes and conventions relate to our film opening because in a murder mystery film there is a lot of tension and suspense.

    Intitution for film opening

    The companies that would produce these films are Lions gate and Paramount this is because they are big production companies so the film will be well known and a lot of people will want to see the film. They also release a range of different film genres so they would happily produce this film. Here I have explained why we picked Paramount and Lionsgate as our film production companies. In this video the reasons have been explained.

    Props research


      We did some research of props we would need in a mystery murder film opening and there wasn't many. So we came up with our own props that we knew we were going to need. These were:
      • Blood
      • School uniform
      • Dogs
      • These were the three main props we used in out film opening, this made it look more realistic because the dogs helped find the body, the school uniform made it look like she was walking home from school and the blood made the death look real.

    Music Ideas




    These two clips from YouTube our are music ideas for out film opening. The two clips are two that we found we liked the best to fit are genre. It was very important to make sure that we got the right music as if we got music that didn't fit our film opening then in could ruin it all together and change the genre. We not only needed the right type of song for the genre but we needed to see that the music went with the actual footage we had.

    Fonts for titles

    This 10 different fonts are the ones that we had to chose between for the title of our film opening. We had ten as we wanted to compare them against each other in order to get the best one to go with are genre. Our genre was murder mystery and so we needed a font that went along with the genre and fitted well with the vibe of our opening. We thought that the font was really important to get right as it wouldn't be as good If we had a font that didn't fit as this could really ruin the genre and main genre of the film.


     









    Audience

    Our target audience for our mystery murder  is 15-30 years olds. The reasons that we decided on this age range was because the graphic content in the film opening wouldn't be suitable for people under the age of 15 but also murder mystery isn't that popular with under 15 and the genre is more suited to people of an older age. The reason the target audience stops and 30 is because overall we felt that people over that age wouldn't really be interested in our film and we also felt that overall 15-30  was the best age range to promote the film. Our primary audience is teenagers because they help decision make. Whereas are secondary audience is early adults because they are the second most important consumer segment we'd like to target.

     

    Marketing



    This power point presentation shows the marketing side of out film opening. It is extremely important to have marketing. On this power point it shows the ways in which the film opening could be advertised, the examples include, websites, social media accounts, film posters and adverts being shown on buses. All these examples are ways in which you could market our film opening. If you don't advertise it then the film doesn't get the attention needed to have a good overall outcome as no one would want to go see it as they wouldn't of heard about it.

    Mood Board



    This is our mood board of our film inspiration-All these film posters are from the same genre of mystery/crime. These films all have murders or some type of criminal case, which links to our film idea, of a girl being murdered and then no one knowing who has done it. Creating the mood board allows us to understand how to present our film opening and how to make it look more like the genre its meant to be. Putting them together gave us inspiration for the film opening and let us develop it more.

    Evidence of Work

    After we filmed our shots we then had to edit the footage. This picture shows Beth editing the clips and adding titles to them.

    From this picture you can see our lap charts, we used these to decide on what roles we would have throughout the time we had.

    First Draft Film Opening Feedback





    When I  looked through the feedback that we got from are film opening some of the same comment seemed to appear such as most people seemed to like the fact the we used dogs and so we decided that we didn't need to make any changes to that as it was overall positive on the scenes with the dogs in them. Another comment that I saw was common was about the voice over and how the person that did it stuttered at some points of it and that we should redo it so it sounds more realistic, after seeing this comments we saw that we needed to do it again and so the next day we went and re did it with someone else who could do it more clearly and so it was more understandable. A comment that we got back that was another positive was that we used different angles which set the scene more and made it more interesting.

                                     News report script

    At around 7:45am this morning the police were alerted to an incident at Chelmer park, a young girl who has just been identified as Lillie Mason, a student from Great Baddow High School was found dead by local dog walker John Roberts. He claims that the dog went over to a pile of leaves and it was only then when he went to go and retrieve his dog that he saw the young girl, he immediately phoned police. When police arrived on the scene they were quick to tell that she was already dead, police say the girl suffered major head injuries and that the injuries were the cause  of death. The police have already started the murder investigation  but have yet to have any main suspects. The family is all fully aware of this tragic incident this morning  and would be grateful if anyone could come forward with information on either who was with Lille Mason on her walk to school. Its not clear to as whether this was a random attack or if 17 year old Lille Mason was a target. The family have asked for people to respect their privacy at this time so that they can start to come to terms with the loss of their daughter.

    Production Diary


    07/11/16- Monday
    On this day we were put into our groups, in my group was Faith and Beth. We had to write down a few film opening ideas to do with the story line and genre.

    My idea was a murder mystery about a murdered girl who is discovered by a dog walker.
    08/11/16-Tuesday  
    On this day we had to come up with our ideas and make something good to present them on to for the rest of our groups.

    09/11/16-Wednesday
    On this day we presented our film ideas to each other and picked the best film opening idea that we agreed on. We picked my idea because it was very successful in the plot, and we also thought it would be easier to film. We had also started planning and adding things on to the story plot.

    10/11/16-Thursday
    On this day we started doing our film presentation on PowerPoint, for our film opening story, saying what our idea is, our marketing, etc. ready to present to our class.

    11/11/16- Friday
    This day we had to present out group PowerPoint to the class the class gave us some ideas that we could develop or ask. These are some feedback we got:
    • a lot of enigma code through out(makes the reader want to watch more)
    • very clear genre/themes
    • might be to hard to imitate a funeral
    • the ex boyfriend is the most interesting character because people want to know how the is involved.

     Independent VS mainstream film: An independent film makes you think and ask yourself questions, it is also associated with critical success. Whereas a mainstream makes you laugh/cry and is often associated with commercial success and is only made as an escapist entertainment
